STATE OF CONCEPT PRESENTS “MURDERESSES”
“The Murderess” at State of Concept, Athens, is a boldly contemporary exhibition that reimagines the feminist possibilities within a century-old literary framework.
The title references Alexandros Papadiamantis’ 1903 novel “The Murderess”, however, the exhibition pushes those boundaries further, offering a dangerously cutting-edge exploration where violence, sexuality, and gender norms are deconstructed through an innovative fusion of media.
In this provocative reimagining, five artists create a hyper-contemporary universe where the merging of weaponry and eroticism, caustic campaigns, medical trolley tables, and hybrid creatures forces a reckoning with gender stereotypes. Through oral narratives of violence, spells, and sexual practices, their works attempt to exorcise patriarchy, challenging its entrenched power in a manner that speaks directly to its ongoing presence 121 years after Papadiamantis’ novel.
