ROMA GALLERY PRESENTS VASO KATRAKI Hurtful Bodies CURATED BY ALIA TSAGKARI

20.03.2025 - 3.05.2025

Roma Gallery unveils Hurtful Bodies, a powerful tribute to the late works of renowned Greek engraver Vaso Katraki. Featuring a compelling series of stone engravings on paper, crafted through her singular technique, the human body becomes a site of tension—where history, memory, and resistance converge.

Katraki’s figures feel both ancient and alien—elongated forms stripped of detail, yet loaded with presence. With gestures carved directly into sandstone, her work radiates a raw physicality. These bodies are not simply seen—they’re felt: heavy with silence, scarred by time, and vibrating with untold stories.

At the heart of the exhibition stands a sculptural Matrix representing a Madonna with her son—an arresting piece that captures the full essence of Katraki’s technique. It fuses raw material with intimate emotion, revealing her power to transform engraving into something both sacred and visceral.

Matter becomes message in Katraki’s hands. Stone is not just medium but memory; it holds weight, both literal and metaphorical. Her compositions blur the line between sculpture and drawing, pressing into the page a tactile sense of endurance.
